Our Vineyards – Načeratický kopec

Above the south-eastern edge of Znojmo rises Načeratický kopec – one of the largest vineyard sites in the Znojmo region and a place of exceptionally rich nature. Since 2019 we have been farming 8.22 hectares of vineyards here. Come with us and see where the grapes for our wines come from.
The Načeratický kopec vineyard site
The site lies east of the village of Oblekovice in a group of hills with varied relief. The slopes face west to south-east at an altitude of 226 to 280 metres above sea level.
Soil: gravel and sand terrace on weathered rock of the Dyje Massif, acidic subsoil
Average annual temperature: 8.8 °C
Average annual rainfall: around 500 mm
Typical varieties of the site: Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Grüner Veltliner, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling
Old vines that give character
On our part of Načeratický kopec we grow three varieties. What you taste most in the wine is the age of the vines – older vines bear fewer grapes, but those grapes have all the more concentration and character.
Pinot Blanc – 52-year-old vines
Pinot Gris – 42-year-old vines
Grüner Veltliner – 18-year-old vines
From the Burgundy varieties of this site we make, for example, our blend Coupage PINOT Blanc & Gris – a full, distinctive wine that faithfully reflects the character of the place. You will find more wines from these varieties on our Grüner Veltliner page or among our white wines.
Vineyards amid protected nature
Načeratický kopec is a natural monument and a Site of Community Importance within the European Natura 2000 network. It protects extensive steppe areas with warmth-loving grassland communities and many rare plants and insects.

Interestingly, the site owes its excellent condition to its former military use. Until 1989 it was a tank training ground, and the heavy vehicles prevented the slopes from becoming overgrown with shrubs. Today, grazing goats and sheep help preserve this rare habitat.
What grows and lives on the hill
On the acidic subsoil lie dry steppe grasslands with scattered trees and shrubs – dwarf cherry, Turkey oak and downy oak. The grasslands are home to field nigella, Bohemian gagea, Illyrian buttercup, pale hollyhock, dwarf everlast and many other species. In spring, the hill comes alive with the blossoms of the greater pasque flower.
Rare insects live here, too: near the pinks you will find jewel beetles and the Hungarian rose chafer, known in Czechia only from the Znojmo area. In the grass hop the saddle-backed bush cricket and the Italian locust. Birds nesting here include the barred warbler, the red-backed shrike and the corn bunting.
Wine that carries the signature of its place
Farming in such a place is a commitment for us. The vineyard is part of a landscape that is precious in its own right, and we want it to stay that way for generations to come. We believe this is reflected in the wine as well – in its minerality, its structure and the pure expression of the variety.
